The discomfort and pain in the knee are the most common cause of consultation in Traumatology, and surgery of this joint, the most recurrent intervention of the specialty. The first group of consultations is related to young or middle-aged people, who come after an accident or trauma, and whose cause is usually in the practice of contact sports and high impacts, such as football, basketball, skiing or rugby; car accidents, falls or blows with great force.

In these cases, the most common diagnoses are a fracture, rupture of crossed ligaments, and injuries to the meniscus (a structure that cushions movements).

Within the symptoms of fracture are intense pain, swelling, deformity, squeaks in the joint and problems to bend the knee or bear weight in that leg. In the case of injuries to the menisci and crossed ligaments, it is also accompanied by a sensation of persistent instability over time.

Knee osteoarthritis

There are older patients, between 55 and 80 years old, who consults for chronic pain in the knee with a degenerative origin in the cartilage, such as osteoarthritis, which is characterized by the presence of pain, crunches, and inflammation.

In these cases, the vast majority is resolved with a change in lifestyles, with rest and kinesiotherapy, says the specialist, who adds that among the main causes of osteoarthritis are hereditary or genetic factors, accidents, pathologies of joints and obesity.

Many of these patients are referred to the traumatologist from the geriatric or rheumatological consultation, when invalidating pain levels are reached and where pain management with medications can be insufficient, costly, and with significant adverse effects. Knee pain can have a great impact on the quality of life of the patient, who loses independence and self-efficacy. These people start to stay at home, which favors the appearance of obesity and require to have knee replacement surgery in India.

Knee surgeries

In the face of osteoarthritis, after consultation with the specialist, it is possible to indicate the replacement surgery of the cartilage of the knee, where a metal prosthesis is placed.

After three to four days of hospitalization, our patients leave the clinic walking, only with the help of canes. In the rest of the injuries, the joint replacement surgery in India depends on the severity and characteristics of each patient, ranging from more conservative measures, which include the use of drugs and rehabilitation therapies, to surgery.

One of the most frequent surgical techniques is arthroscopy, which allows minimally invasive interventions, in less time and with minimal complications.

Knee ached and swollen after another illness

Knee pain may be a response to an external cause, such as an infection. There is such a type of arthritis as reactive: it develops as an organism’s response to something— an injury, for example, or an infection. For example, there is such a disease as Reiter's syndrome: in the background or after a previous infection (usually chlamydial infection) a triad of symptoms develops- arthritis, urethritis, and conjunctivitis. Arthritis manifests itself in different ways- both by itself (and quickly passes), and with pain, fever and skin manifestations.

Knee suddenly increased in size, bad bends, and whines

One of the possible reasons is synovitis, when the synovial membrane, the inner layer of the articular cavity inflames, and effusion accumulates. This can happen due to blood drift infections, injuries (for example, meniscus injuries in athletes), endocrine pathology, and even a reaction to allergens. Acute synovitis can become chronic if left untreated.
